MIND STUDIO: The restoration of the ecological landscape of the Yangonggong Mine is a poetic dialogue between the mountains and the starry sky. This embodies the restoration, management, and exploration practice of the landscape archi-tects on the abandoned mines to alleviate pollution, re-engage the site with nature, maintain ecological diversity, and pursue sustainable development.

The conceptual design of the landscape restoration is based on the quarry’s unique geography and intends to reflect the site’s culture and memory, evoking a new sense of belonging. The project team adopted various methods such as pollution control, substrate improvement, vegetation restoration, and water system organization to recreate the natural ecology of the mine park. By newly interpreting the natural landscapes of the East with modern methods, creating “entry” landscape experiences, and planting landscapes to change with the four seasons, the design suc-cessfully popularizes ecological science and provides a place for people to communicate.

Site status and difficulties (Existing condition analysis)
The site is located in Chengguan Town, Puding, Guizhou. It was originally a sand and gravel mining area with an area of 359,000 .0m². The surrounding natural resources are abundant, and the Yelang Lake Reservoir is adjacent to the water source protection area and the drinking water source. The terrain is high in the south and low in the north. The mountain is 1420-meter-high, with a vast view of the landscape. However, due to the top-down stepped open-pit mining in this mining area, the ore is exposed to the surface, and soil erosion and environmental damage are pretty severe.

Design Strategy
The landscape design integrates the relationship between the large interface of the mountains and rockfaces with the intricacies of the local, fast-growing Moso bamboo. Wetlands are designed to collect rainwater to conserve wa-ter sources. The soil is piled up into hills and built into an artistic terrain. The space divides into two parts: one treats water as static while the other treats mountains as dynamic, providing visitors with a range of conditions for indi-vidual or multi-person events.

Space node design
The design uses meteorite as a metaphor for the stone pit in the mines. The meteorite transitions into a bamboo forest in which a road, paved with permeable pavement made from the mine’s gravel, invites people to explore. Walking along the bamboo forest path, one’s line of sight stretches to take in the colorful leafy trees.

The trajectory of the stars separates the nebula and water, forming two ecological wetlands in different spaces, with the open water surface and the feeling of floating islands in the water. The boulder array inspires awe: through close contact with the larger-than-life feeling of the massive stones, one is confronted with the majestic scale of the site. Plantings of self-maintaining aquatic plants will eventually become an ecological wetland meadow, increasing the interaction between humans and nature.

Social problems solved by design (social significance)
Due to the rapid urbanization processes in China, abandoned mines in quarries have caused many environmental problems such as soil erosion, flood, biodiversity loss, and damage to the earth’s surface, all of which impact the sustainable development of local urban ecology and social economy. The Guizhou Yangonggong Mine Park Project is not only a conversation among mountains, rivers, and stars but also an attempt at communication between humans and nature. Ecological restoration of the site and continuous observation of nature will become an essential and ongoing reshaping of the relationship between man and nature, in which people can learn to appreciate nature more deeply. While restoring the site’s ecological design of this rehabilitation project also provides a space for public activities and communication for residents.
