For 10 years now, bureau David Apheceix has been working on the progressive transformation of a former industrial mill in Boissy-le-Châtel, France, into a contemporary art venue for Galleria Continua. Started in 2013, the project aims to maintain and preserve the industrial wasteland, typical of the site. The skatepark is the latest addition to this transformation.
A meeting point for children and parents as well as a support for practices involving a multitude of rolling objects and a space for assiduous skateboarders, skateparks create temporary communities as well as lasting friendships. This quality of “public life” made relevant the project of a skatepark on this site, to solicit a new public that is not committed to contemporary art. It comes from the desire to reinterpret the fluid forms of the first Californians skateparks of the 1970s and the empirical shapes of non-standard architecture.
Designed as a continuous layer avoiding elementary divisions, the skatepark is intended as a structure for the landscape and a vessel. Stretched along the old railway tracks which cross the industrial site, the skatepark intrudes between trees and shrubs. By its length, it binds buildings in this distended territory. The curved line of the raw concrete welcomes the shadows of the trees, and its forms react to the specificities of the terrain and the existing vegetation. The construction explores the possibilities of wet-sprayed concrete. On site, metal frames are curved, assembled and welded. The fresh concrete is sprayed directly onto the metal reinforcement, then pulled and smoothed to the desired shapes before setting.
Although constrained by skateboarding logics, the project is an open form that is propitious to opportunistic uses. Its surface stages complex figures as well as the most innocuous situations and gestures of watchers. By its picturesque bias and scenography qualities, the skatepark is an image transmitter in a territory where there is a lack of representation.
