The Avelames river is, in a way, a part of the Pedras Salgadas park; it surrounds it, gives it a shape and a border, and embraces it. The requalification of its banks - made with the cooperation of a landscape architect and a hydraulic engineer - proposed to make the river's course more organic and, by creating dikes, to make up for the lack of water in the summer season, which dries up its bed.
Thus, the river banks ceased to be an imposition resulting from the encounter of the water with the surrounding terrain. The channel, which flowed essentially straight, began to meander, molding itself to the image of a snake in motion. Bridges were also built so that the route was not dictated by the existence of only one way to cross the river, and what was once an obstacle was transformed into a possibility of enjoyment.
The creation of crossing places turned the path into a promenade. Sitting areas, beach areas, and small docks dot the river banks, for the enjoyment of the park's tenants and the town's population. The idea behind the whole concept is reminiscent of the romantic spa era: families laying out food on spotless white linen towels, a child learning to row a small boat tied to the shore with a rope, a pair of noisy teenage swimmers competing to reach an imaginary finish line.
