Located at the “Polo Científico y Tecnológico de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires”, the features at “Science Park” are part of a scientific and cultural project. As a part of the museum, these have an educational purpose without sacrificing the fun aspect of a playground.
The shapes of the playground’s features set a link to different fields of science: Biology, Physics, Genetics, Chemistry, etc. The different structures are designed based on traditional playgrounds, so that everybody can play without having to read instructions.
Molecules/seesaws, blood cell/swings, DNA chains/spinners, muscle cell/horse saddle, chromosome/horse saddle and a neuron/climber are scattered over an hexagonal footprint matching the theme of the park. To complete the project, there are some magnifying glasses that let kids observe any object they find at the park.
The chromatic pallette is limited to orange and grey. The green rubber floor camouflages with the grass at the park. One of the project’s main goals was to generate a nice visual effect: the idea of the playground as a unit is intensified by avoiding separates objects scattered around a big space. Each feature of the playground is recognized by its shape, color and size. In this regard, one of them was supposed to be “very big”, so the playground could be identified from the park headers, the train and the side entry situated on Godoy Cruz street.
The manufactory process was hand-made due to the fact that the designs were thought exclusively for the site. Each feature has its own prototype, and that is why the main material is iron, which is highly malleable and demands very little maintenance. The Blood Cells and the Molecules have exterior surfaces made of PRFV (plastic reinforced with fiberglass) with polyurethane nautical paint. The Neuron has also nets and PVC slides.
The design team was integrated by architects and industrial designers, who worked in association with scientists from the Mincyt’s National Programme for the Popularization of Science and Innovation.
