Strategically nestled between contemporary high-rise and existing trees the South Eveleigh Youth Space aspires to truly reflect an urban skate plaza within inner city Sydney. The historic locomotive workshop and industrial era that drove the original Australian Technology Park inspired the plaza design and innovative custom material pallet.
The site allocated had several design constraints, including being set within a tight space for a traditional skatepark (approximately 50m x 20m) with a railway tunnel running 5m below the site, existing trees, steep topography bordering the south and ten storey high buildings to the north blocking afternoon sun.
Selectively located features allow users to go from one obstacle to the next to complete a ‘flowing line’ the fundamental purpose of a skate plaza. Within such a confined area, smart use of space with a flat and open layout makes the facility feel and function much bigger than it is with over 15 unique obstacles. This open layout safely allows multiple users to activate the space, maximising capacity at busier times of use, while also having ample room for waiting areas while another user completes a run.
Carefully selected ‘fit for purpose’ materials link the youth space to the industrial heritage of the site. These include brick banks to the north, granite ledges and pavers, and industrial steel elements located throughout the facility. This high-end materiality makes the skate plaza one of a kind in Australia and gives users the unique feeling of rolling in a real urban environment with the much loved ‘clickety clack’ under wheel.
The plaza is set within a grid of hardy trees, with customised skateable tree pits, again adding to the real plaza feel and along with night time lighting this allows for all day / all season use.
Celebrating cultural heritage through materiality, this project immediately contributes to sense of place, paying homage to the industrial era that drove the original development. The unique use of materials not commonly associated with skateparks, is taking industry standard design practise to a new level and broadening the typical understanding of how a skatepark can be interpreted in the public realm.¬
Incorporating this local scale Youth Plaza within a commercial urban renewal project demonstrates how well-designed public space can bring a vibrant liveness to inner city developments. It is already much loved by local community and is owned and activated on a daily basis, demonstrating its worth as a valued community asset.¬
