The ambition for Kultorvet is to create a space which makes people stop on the busy shopping street of Købmagergade. The placement of a fountain in the middle of the square forms a resistance to the crowd and redirects the stream of people to the sides of the square.

The fountain, which can also be used as a stage, creates a space for stay and relaxation in an otherwise hectic atmosphere along the busy shopping street – and instead the more calmer sides are exposed to the pulsating life that was once reserved for the centre of the square.

The use of black diabas stones at Kultorvet sustains the connection to the history and name of the square. The angular shapes with different surface treatments foster a varied surface which appears as a subtle floor for the square’s diverse rows of houses.
