The public installation Entre les Rangs is a winning entry in the annual Luminothérapie competition, a Quartier des Spectacles initiative that challenges Montreal’s design community to work with artists from diverse disciplines to create an immersive winter experience. The work produced was selected by a multidisciplinary jury with the aim of stimulating locally-based creativity and offering the public an urban winter playground. Situated in the heart of the city, Quartier des Spectacles is an international showcase for new multimedia technology, making Montreal, a UNESCO City of design, a global leader in the urban exhibition of digital content.
Thematically, the competition seeks to explore and reflect the relationship between light and its ability to positively affect the overall well-being of the inhabitants of a city caught in the icy grip of winter. The well-documented, negative psychological and physiological effects of a deficit of natural sunlight is an implicit dilemma faced by northern populations. Technological ingenuity provides respite to sufferers in the form of artificial light sources which deliver the remedial components of sunlight. Designers are invited to expound upon the curative nature of light on a communal scale – a conceptual, collective therapy available during the opportune dark days of winter.
Working in collaboration with Udo Design (lighting), Boris Dempsey and Pierre Fournier (technical), Patrick Watson (music), Marouane Sahbi (programming) and Landscapers Côté Jardin (installation), KANVA's proposal Entre les Rangs was selected as the award-winning project. Creating a large-scale metaphor that evokes the shimmering of vast fields of wheat in the winter city, the project was featured in the city’s prominent urban hub Place des Festivals during the 4th edition of Luminothérapie from December 11th 2013 to February 2nd 2014.
Entre les Rangs revisits the agricultural history of Quebec to contextualize a dialogue with a contemporary urban context. As a reference to Quebec’s wheat fields that undulate in the wind and through the seasons, the contemporary installation Entre les Rangs is comprised of thousands of flexible stems topped with white reflectors that take advantage of the surrounding stimuli to create an ever-shifting array of animation. Each burst of wind triggers a glittering movement of the flexible stems. The stems magnify the effect of the wind and of lights projected from the site’s mega structures, acting as a live canvas, both receptive and transformative. Dispersed throughout the installation, sources of music offer a melody that follows and leads through the field like a burst of wind. Immersed in the heart of a sensory experience, visitors are invited to a winter walk through a series of winding paths, where the stems merge into a large canvas agitated by the wind, caressed by light and carried by music.
Since it’s first appearance at Montreal’s Luminothérapie festival, Entre les Rangs has travelled to more that 10 cities. After Cergy-pontoise (France), Durham (England), Chicago, London, Edmonton, Georgetown, Calgary and Charlotte, Entre the Rangs was installed at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Institute in Washington, D.C. and at the Boston Seaport before coming back to Montreal this winter.
