RAY is a completely transparent construction. It is not there. But it is. Standing on the street, seeing and feeling the surroundings, but at the same time feeling a kind of security and comfort. There is a simultaneous connection and disconnection with it’s environment.
The construction was built using a standard system of greenhouse construction. For obvious reasons: cost, speed and availability. In order to integrate the ‘greenhouse’ into its surroundings, we applied a number of architectural ‘tweaks’: The slope of the roof of the glass construction is based on the roof slope of the sacristy of the church. The orangery also stands perfectly in line with the front facade of this sacristy.
The glass roof of the greenhouse thus also fits perfectly with the roof slope of the Sint-Niklaaskerk and the city hall (Robbrecht & Daem) a bit further. A detail, but with a visual impact. The glass building is not just a ‘landed’ greenhouse, but it settles in its surroundings. Naturally.
RAY seamlessly connects to the public domain. The intention is that it functions as a public domain, where people can walk in and out freely. Large sliding gates ensure that the building becomes street, and the street becomes building. But always sheltered from the famous Belgian rain.
After RAY is dismantled, the site will be completely restored to its original state, without any permanent visible damage. “The rice wood that we collect: set it up, and it is a hut. pull it over: there is the field again. Junichiro Tanizaki.”
Like a plane or a boat, RAY is what it is, and looks as it is, evident as an exact link between ratio and poetry, responding to the setting, and its beauty is almost self-evident.
