C _29 is an interwar listed building located in the center of Chalkida, Greece. 314 Architecture Studio was appointed to renovate the existing building and convert it to an intriguing eyewear store called “The Optimist”. The design was based on the concept of the gallery, so that the clients can have a full view of the variety of glasses available at the store.
The building itself is a composite construction with the ground floor being made of bearing masonry and the two upper floors of reinforced concrete and brickwork filling. The space is kept minimal and airy, expanding along the central market and the back courtyard / patio, which is formed in the core of the building.
The main design aspect is the creation of a gradient technique in the texture and the materiality, in order to emphasize on the reflection and the absorbance of light. For that reason, the studio has kept the existing rough stone walls exposed at the lower part of the structure, while using smooth white paint for the top part and light-colored concrete for the floors. This gradient tool also plays a significant role to the choice of materials, affecting even their mere existence, or their theoretical absence, in the formed space, as if they are disclosed or “erased”. That way, the space acquires certain level of purity, allowing the objects to be highlighted.
Some functional objects like the reception desk, storage cupboards, and stools are redesigned as prismatic sculptures, consisting of white and mirror surfaces.
The courtyard space is an imaginary cube defined by black metal poles. Since the plan didn’t allow visual contact between the courtyard and the shop, the studio designed a wall fully covered by mirror at a 45° angle in the intermediate space, which results in visual continuity between the two spaces. The outdoor area is open for the customers to socialize and relax in. Throughout the day, natural light floods the courtyard and reflects off the white and mirrored surfaces. At night, the outdoor area is illuminated by filament bulbs hanging from long black cords.
