Twenty years have passed and the recovery of Chiado is still necessary. All cities need fires to make plans and subsequent recoveries. The recovery plan for the affected area of Chiado was carried out slowly. Some “burnt” buildings and others “not burnt” were in urgent need of work, like so many others outside the area.
The connection between Pátio B and the ruins of the Igreja do Carmo, Largo do Carmo and the Santa Justa Elevator remained to be completed. It is necessary to conclude a route of urban logic, redoing what existed before, revitalizing abandoned, forgotten spaces, sloppy backyard spaces that are also a city. Twenty years have passed since the first invitation and Álvaro Siza has been called again to complete this part of the Plan and extend it to what they now call Terraços do Carmo and which corresponds to the existing platforms to the east of the Church and Convent of Carmo / Barracks of GNR, occupied by houses and low quality buildings.
将庭院B与Largo do Carmo和Terraços do Carmo连接起来的计划开始整体实施。
Twenty years have passed and I too see myself back in Chiado, looking for quotas, interpreting drawings, visiting what has been done and what is still waiting. The Plan for the connection of Pátio B to Largo do Carmo and Terraços do Carmo started as a whole. Important agreements and protocols were made and studies started. Almost immediately there was a need to divide the work into two parts: one part corresponding to the connection of Pátio B to Largo do Carmo and the other to Terraços do Carmo. The Plan, now approved by the various entities, differs little from the initial idea and defined in the Plan of the Chiado Sinister Zone. Adaptations were made resulting from new premises and a better knowledge of reality.
The route is the same and will allow the descent to Rua do Carmo or Rua Garrett from Largo do Carmo, by means of ramps, stairs and also by public elevator incorporated in the recovery of the Leonel Building, a building that partially supports the access, in bridge , from and to the Santa Justa Elevator. The intervention area was enlarged next to the Building known as Palácio Valadares or Escola Veiga Beirão, creating urbanity, allowing other routes, greater experience. Simultaneously with the project work, the archaeologist and anthropologist team opened and dug at points that seemed essential to us to verify and define quotas, stocks, confirm convictions and readings.
The result was surprising and confirmed convictions, forced quota corrections and adjustments to stocks. More excavations, more studies will be necessary for history to complete information, enrich the urban, support the Plan. The studies for the execution of the execution projects follow, the demolitions of the constructions of Terraços do Carmo and the second phase of this work. Complex of demands, difficulties and finding solutions.
