Universidad Torcuato Di Tella decided in 2009 to unify its location at Campus Alcorta, after several years of running its activities in two separate plots, in order to concentrate students, professors and administrative staff in one major building, that requiered a strategic plan for its renovation and expansión
The master plan developed by RDR Arquitectos proposes three major stages for the completion of the works. It envisages the renovation and expansion of the building on Avenida Alcorta -formerly a logistics building for the national water supply company-, the construction of a new auditorium, and the subsequent construction of a second building on Calle Saenz Valiente, which would complete the building capacity of the site according to urban regulations. Already in the first stage, the project incorporates an interior garden that integrates with the surrounding park and gives the site its character of a university campus. The first stage has been developed in four phases, conceived to allow the University to continue in operation while expanding according to its needs.
First stage 2011- 2016
The existing building on Avenida Alcorta has a very characteristic structure of 90 x 25 meters and 5 floors, built-in reinforced concrete slab without beams and columns with capitals. The intervention seeks to enhance the richness of this structure through its volumetric and chromatic articulation with the new elements. These operations allow a precise reading of the relationship between the new and the existing. It highlights the characteristic geometry of the structure and accompanies its rhythm and variations.
On the lower floors are located the larger spaces such as classrooms, cafeteria, library, and workshops that require great depth of floor plan. The possibility of incorporating light through patios and skylights on the upper floors made it possible to include there the university's extensive program of academic and institutional offices. In this way, the internal offices and open spaces also benefit from natural light.
At this stage, new access to the campus was added through the Alcorta building. The intervention takes advantage of the old truck entrance to place an elevated esplanade that functionally unifies the ground floor, where the new access hall is located. This glazed and open hall becomes a reference space, accessible both from the avenue through a large staircase and from the interior garden. The new entrance hall also structures the building's internal circulation system. It houses a sculptural staircase that crosses the double-height generating a fluid connection between the mass-use floors that go from the basement to the first floor. The generous circulations throughout the building organize informal meeting places that promote exchange among students.
Completion of the Alcorta building: 4th floor and green terrace
This work culminates the first stage of the master plan developed in 2009 by RDR architects. The new top of the building consists of a metal structure with glazed enclosures that rests on the existing rooftop. The 4th floor houses a restaurant, offices, and classrooms and the 5th floor is a large landscaped rooftop over the entire length of the building. This new green space allows the University to expand its recreational facilities and enjoy open views of the river and the city.
The terrace was conceived as a large park capable of accommodating leisure and gastronomic venues as well as open-air auditoriums and areas for academic and sports activities. The large folds of the roof enrich the route and generate situations of formal and informal open-air auditoriums. These folds, in turn, make it possible to accommodate below them three large classrooms on the 4th floor, giving them a height by their dimensions.
The courtyards bring light to the lower levels and contain the stairs leading directly to the terrace from the 4th-floor hall. The belvedere, suspended in front of the river, invites one to celebrate with its audacity the will of the institution to push its ambitions to the limits of the possible.
