Somewhere in the city of Palo Alto, California, are sculptures that give new meaning to balls of steel. Six typography sculptures were designed and built by Joe O’Connell and Blessing Hancock to be displayed on the streets of Palo Alto. The collection is titled Words of Steel and it was put together by cutting out multilingual phrases into steel and welding them together to create giant, hollow, rounded shapes. The six sculptures are located in between the Palo Alto Main Library and Arts Center. During the day, the steel structures can be examined in the daylight and the words and messages can be explored. At night, LED lights illuminate the structures to cast large shadows of the wording. The messages are cast out in large shadows for visitors to enjoy. The lights on the sculptures are controlled by interactive controls so visitors can control the color of the lights at their leisure. The lighted messages can be seen and enjoyed from a distance.
