To complement the new Visitor Center at Building 210, a New Observation Post building replaces Building 211 and better supports the act of observing. This signature structure is a transparent lantern on the bluff, drawing visitors up from Crissy Field and marking the new Presidio Plaza as the place to begin one’s exploration of the Park. The building emerges out of the landscape and the primary circulation spine folds up and onto the roof, making a unique roof deck experience that punctuates the beginning or end of one’s journey. The roof deck promontory affords panoramic views of the Presidio and its context, here one has a bird’s eye view up to the Main Post and out over the landscape that witnessed the stories told in the Visitor Center. The roof deck is also an interpretive instrument shaped into the submarine topography, or bathymetry, of the Golden Gate. It serves as a reference point to the view beyond and a social theater for sharing the experience. Inside the Observation Post building is a cozy living room for the Presidio where visitors can sit and enjoy the view, have a lunch at the café, attend community events and presentations, or check out observation tool kits to use on their expeditions into the broader park. We sited the building to maximize views, to frame the Presidio Plaza, and to protect it from the prevailing winds. We nestled an amphitheater into the transition from building to landscape. With southern exposure and wind protection, this space will allow rangers to orient tour groups and for the Observation Post to host a variety of performance programs for visitors and locals.3 ]4 c2 g& q: j
