Sloterdijk is located in the west side of the city and is part of the Business Park Westpoort. The Orlysquare is located in front of the station, which connects the station with the Hemboogstation. With the relocation of the tram and bus station the square lost most of its function and became an empty and abandoned surface with just concrete. In 2012 the Community of Amsterdam developed an area strategy to offer the mono-functional office area a new perspective. This consisted in improving the environmental climate for other functions such as housing, hotels, short-stay apartments and events.
The Orlysquare is a major hub in the area, where traffic from the city, from the harbour and from the business parks come together with the public transport-users at the node Sloterdijk. Goal of the transformation is creating a sustainable public space to invite users and future residents to meet and accommodate in the heart of the area. The design has been made in direct relationship with the adjacent Brettenpark. The green design refers to the natural character and the image of the plants in the area. The design not only offers recreational stay, but also space for bicycle parking, hotel and catering industry and small-scale events.
With this design there has been chosen to invest in the public space first, to make it more attractive for new developments. The design was made in consultation with all the stakeholders, as well as the Dutch Railway stations (NS) and Prorail. In the process there has also been given room for promoters to give a creative boost to the square
The design is connecting two important components: the promenade and the green square. The promenade runs from the central hall at the station to the Hemboogstation and makes several offices in northern direction accessible. It is being used as a pedestrian route and functions as a balcony in front of the station with a view over the Brettenpark. Baked materials and small boulders pave the promenade. The Gleditsia trees, that have been reused in the square are forming a green roof that guides the stream of pedestrians.
The green square is the place to be! With curving paths in the green, to sit and enjoy the sun and also direct routes from A to B cutting the planting. The location of the paths has been based on natural walking lines from and to the train station. A coincidence came by when designing it: it was snowing in Amsterdam which made the shortest walks visible. Two pavilions with terraces are located in the middle of the green. The paths are paved with concrete plates in game without confinement, which makes it possible for the planting and paving to get together.
